All things considered, Marvel's The Avengers is probably one of the studio's most lighthearted films to date, packed with family-friendly sight gags and witty one-liners. It's hard to believe then that Joss Whedon's crown jewel was initially given an R rating by the MPAA.
As Marvel's own Kevin Feige explained in an interview with Movies.com, "When we submitted The Avengers, the first couple cuts of it came back from the MPAA rated R. That happened twice. So we went back and had to make adjustments."

When asked what it was exactly that set the film back, Feige cited Agent Coulson's big, spoilery scene as the main hangup. "Whenever you impale somebody from their back and the blade comes out their chest, there are issues," he said chuckling.
Indeed, upon closer inspection of that sequence, you don't really see that much of Coulson getting impaled, just a gruesome noise and a quick cutaway to Thor:
Laslty, Feige was asked if we might yet see the revived Coulson in some form in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Naturally, the Marvel head played it coy: "That is a good question that I probably shouldn't answer for any number of reasons."
